HISTORY OF NORTH TONAWANDA MEALS ON WHEELS

The first meetings, in 1972, to plan the start-up and operation of a Meals on Wheels’ site in North Tonawanda, and possibly the City of Tonawanda, were begun by some members of various local churches and a group of community-minded individuals. Nearly a year of creating volunteer lists, finishing legal work, obtaining a site for meal preparation and raising funds, culminated in delivery of the first meals to 6 clients in North Tonawanda in early October 1973. The client list had grown by December of that year, so that more than 900 meals had been prepared, packaged, and delivered.

The City of Tonawanda was added, as the number of clients grew and more routes were organized. Today, we enjoy the coverage of both cities served by a total of nine routes, with between 10 and 18 clients on each route. It takes at least 20 volunteers per day, five in the kitchen and 16 on the routes (two on each route), or 100 volunteers per week to produce and deliver meals for our present client list.

The first kitchen used by the early North Tonawanda Meals on Wheels was at St. Mark Lutheran Church & School. We used that kitchen for nineteen years.

An organization was formed, in 1984, for the purpose of searching for a location to house the three non-profit organizations (North Tonawanda Meals on Wheels, the Interchurch Food Pantry, and the Clothes Closet) together in one building. This organization became Twin Cities Community Outreach (TCCO).

A building was made available, in 1991, which was located at 100 Ridge Road in North Tonawanda. After a year of hard work, the building was cleaned and renovated enough to be used for the three agencies. Only a part of the 63,000 square foot building was used by TCCO, the unused half turned into the Transportation Center for the North Tonawanda School District. Other renovations were accomplished to further complete the new facilities, with the School District’s help.

Initial grants to North Tonawanda Meals on Wheels from NY State and the Presbyterian Women’s National Organization were used for the construction of a professional kitchen in the TCCO facility, which was completed in 1992. We moved into our new quarters during that year. Further renovations have constantly improved our facilities. Recent grants have enabled us to replace flooring, install energy-efficient lighting and add ceiling insulation to bring our facility to where it is today.

We proudly delivered our one-millionth meal in November, 2008, after 35 years of service.
